Halloween is just around the corner, but to be honest I don’t do much decorating for it. I’m not a big fan of scary Halloween movies, or spooky decor, although I do love me some pumpkins and Charlie Brown. Maybe I’m lame {or just a scaredy cat}, and maybe someday when we have kids I will kick my fall decor up a notch as it gets closer to October 31st. I’m curious… do you decorate for Halloween? Just a little bit, or do you go all out?

Well with it being less than a week away I have decided to share 15 Modern Rustic Homes with black exteriors. Although some may consider black homes to be spooky or creepy, these are actually quite beautiful.

In fact, some people will cringe at the idea of a black house, and although it’s nothing new {especially in European countries}, they seem to be on the up and up here in the US. I’ll admit that even I wasn’t too sure how I felt about homes with black exteriors. However, I am finding myself drawn to black homes with more modern lines, lots of windows, and a combination of materials, such as steel and wood.

Not to mention the number of pretty homes I’ve come across lately with charred cedar siding, also known as Shou Sugi Ban. You may know about this ancient Japanese tradition, which has been around for centuries, but if not it’s essentially the method of torching lumber which helps preserve the wood, keep insects away, and prevent fires and rot. Pretty interesting, huh?

You can see some samples below and read more over at Remodelista or Delta Millworks, where they offer a wide variety of woods using this process.

Have you head of Shou Sugi Ban? This ancient Japanese tradition has been around for centuries and is the method of torching lumber which helps preserve the wood, keep insects away, and prevent fires and rot. Pretty interesting, huh?

If you watch the Jennie Garth Project on HGTV you may have even seen how she recently stained the exterior of her home black. I was a little nervous at first but thought it turned out really beautiful, especially against the lighter wood accents. For some reason, I can’t seem to find an exterior photo of her remodeled house anywhere, except in some video promos. If you’ve been watching the show I’d love to hear what you think about the color.

Update: Here is a photo of Jennie Garth’s black house, a renovated ranch in the Hollywood Hills:

  1. Some if these I absolutely LOVE!! Who knew?? I am totally an all white house kinda girl, but I actually love some of these that have the black mixed with wood, stone, and lots of windows! Great round up!

  2. OMG Swoon! I would paint my house black in a second if I could…Love love love houses painted black. They are stunning…especially #8 & 13!

  3. I love the elegance and strong design of every home, it shows different type of inspiration. Thank you for sharing these amazing home design.

  4. We’re thinking of painting our house black. The realtor said “No”, people do not like black houses. I love them! Our house is covered in cedar and has been, I think, painted blue. Is there a recommended paint line and color to use? I can find houses painted black but nothing is ever written about the color used. Thanks

  5. I love black for exteriors and painted my gorgeous new barn Mika Black by CIL. It is stunning! After watching Jennie Garth’s show, we painted the second coat in semi-gloss, which looks fabulous. Otherwise, all the dust sticks to the exterior and shows up on the dark paint.

  6. I painted my big ol farmhouse black w/white trim just around windows and doors. The gutters are copper and the shutters and window boxes are stained walnut.. People haven’t stopped complementing it since :). The one thing I am not happy with though is our choice to go with flat paint instead of semi gloss:/.. Dust sticks and shows up really well on dark flat paint:(.

    1. Wow, that sounds amazing! I can see what you mean about the flat paint though. We went with satin black in our kitchen but can only imagine using a flat paint color outside.

  7. I have loved black for interior and exterior for about eight years now. We had a black bedroom one time. People thought I was crazy but they loved it! We moved into a new house two years ago and dining room is painted a dark grayish black and looks fantastic!
I love these black houses and have been wanting to have our house painted black or close to black with creamy trim and porch railings and cedar shutters!

  8. Thank you for posting this color combo of charcoal/black and cedar/wood! I love the simplicity and color wash of #8 and the architectural design of #3! Looking for design ideas for creating a tiny house village. Much love from a fellow “tiny houser” <3
