I am in the middle of sprucing up our home for summer and decided to finally re-do a couple cubed tables I picked up from Goodwill for $5 quite a few months ago. I have had these stacked since we moved, and the cats have been using them for the occasional nap. However, these have been way overdue for a makeover and I wanted a new coffee table to go along with our beach-inspired console table.

We have had a few pallets in our storage closet and I have been itching to use the wood for some fun planking projects. I decided that these tables could be paired together to make a neat coffee table, and love that they can be put next to one another, or split up. We could also use them as side tables or a bench and may even add casters later.

For this makeover, I first sanded down the tables a bit to smooth them out and then added 2 coats of a custom mixed aqua colored paint to the inside ( the same color I used on the console table}. I then painted the outside with a couple coats of white paint.

Eric cut the pallet wood to fit on top of each table and we used 5 pieces of wood per table. I then painted the wood in some beach-inspired colors, glued and nailed them to the top of the tables, and as a final touch, we added some metal brackets.

I will say that when we nailed some of the planks down the wood split so I had to use some wood putty to fill in the cracks and then do some touch up painting.

I like that the inside of the cubes is hollow, although it is somewhat awkward. Kobe (kitty shown photobombing one of the pics below) was enjoying sleeping inside one of the tables until I filled them with games. He looked so cute and I wish I would have snapped a photo. I may make a new pillow to put inside one of the tables just so that they can keep one of their sleeping spots. Ya know, because it’s not like we don’t have a super expensive cat house/scratching post for them to use or anything.

And here are some after photos of my new beach-inspired pallet coffee table, yay! What do you think? They may not be perfect, but I really love the planked look of the tables and they have really brightened up our living room. I haven’t sealed them yet because I’m debating if I should distress the tops a bit more first.

I was so excited to start decorating my new tables that I somehow managed to drop a hurricane vase, boooooo (shown in box below). I ended up grabbing a quart size mason jar to use instead and tied some twine around it. I think it turned out pretty cute for a quick fix.

Bailey was also in a lot of photos since she was taking a nap on the couch, but I must have been making too much noise because she eventually got up and went to her bed, ha.

I love the functionality of these tables. I can put them side by side if I want to, or separate them. We have a lot of games, so they didn’t all fit, but I do love how we have storage for our favorites, as well as easy accessibility.

  2. I love those tables, I just love the pallet look. Were did you get the base? They would look great in our ‘green room’.

    1. Thanks Felicia, we actually picked up the bases {tables/storage?} at a local goodwill and paid just $5 for both! The sticker that was on them said Target though.

  3. What a makeover! I love these little tables… totally digging the whole beachy vibe you have going on. So pretty! Like the sisal wrapped candle stick, and I love the yellow chevron pillows I spy in the background too!!

    1. Haha, I love those chevron pillows too {made from leftover fabric from our previous dining chairs}, although I think it’s about time I make some new pillows. Thank you so much for stopping by!

  5. These are so awesome! I love the beachy look – those colors are so relaxing. I wish I could get a couple of pallets – there are so many things I’d love to try! My son works at a large grocery chain, but they recycle their pallets, darn it. Thanks so much for sharing (saw it on Memories by the Mile).

    1. Hi Kim! My mom actually got these crates from work but I have heard of people scoring free pallets from stores like Target. Maybe your son’s work could recycle a pallet to you 🙂 Thanks for popping over from Memories by the Mile!

  11. I am amazed at your tables!! The transformation looks awesome. I was thinking they looked too modern for the space but after you added the wood on top and the paint, I was digging it. I think you should sand them a wee bit more so that they match your other table. Go for it! Lol. TFS!!
