This has to be one of the easiest ways to make holiday pillows. Seriously. I purchased some Christmas placemats at Target last year and after using coupons they were only $1 each!

However, I as soon as I unpacked them this year I knew they were meant to be something other than placemats… pillows! So today I am sharing how I made super easy DIY Holiday Placemat Pillows.

DIY Holiday Placemat Pillows

I am not much of a seamstress. I don’t own a sewing machine and the last time I used one I was in the 9th grade {a loooong time ago}. I don’t sew very often and am not that great at it, not that it keeps me from sewing things anyway, lol. In fact, I reupholstered our dining room chairs a couple of years ago… by hand.

I hope to someday have a sewing machine and learn how to use one again, but until then I don’t mind sewing a couple of projects by hand especially if they are as easy as these placemat pillows.

Update: Better yet, you can skip the sewing all together by using Liquid Stitch!

Here is what you will need to make your own placemat pillow:

**Make sure the placemat is the kind that is is already sewn together with 2 pieces. I used Target threshold brand which are regularly priced at $3.99 each

You should probably iron your placemats first, otherwise it will have lines all over it like mine did. Woops. Also, if your placemats are only made from one piece of fabric, no worries just sew or use liquid stitch to attach 2 of them together.

Here is what my placemat looked like:

I decided to take the pillow stuffing out of an old pillow I made a couple years ago, but you could buy some pillow stuffing or inserts at any fabric store.

Tip: Shopping the pillow clearance section at places like HomeGoods is one of my favorite ways to snag pillow inserts at an affordable price.

How to make No-Sew Placemat Pillows

Don’t want to sew? Liquid Stitch, which is essentially a fabric glue, has become my new BFF and it works awesome! You will basically use the seam ripper {or a needle} to unravel some of the threading holding the placemat together, knot the loose thread edges, insert your pillow stuffing, and then close the seams back up using the liquid stitch. I like to use binder clips to hold the seams closed while the glue dries. Easy peasy.

If you are using stuffing I would recommend only opening a small section, maybe 3 inches or so. If you are using a pillow insert then I would open one entire side.

If you plan to hand sew:

If you don’t want to use a sewing machine or liquid stitch then you can hand sew the placemat pillow instead. This project requires such minimal sewing that you could start this during a commercial break and be finished before your show is back on!

Simply follow the steps above but rather than closing the seams with fabric glue, you will sew them together.

That’s it! It was so easy and since I only had to sew a small section it didn’t take long to make either. In fact, it was so easy I made a couple more from additional Target placemats.

Not too shabby for some new holiday pillows that help spread Christmas cheer throughout our home. I think these would make great gifts, and of course you could always use placemats that could even stick around after the holiday season.

I love how these turned out and have since become obsessed with placemats. I can’t walk into Target, HomeGoods, or World Market without checking out the placemats….or even the napkins. #placematobsessed

So what do you think?

    1. Thanks Tanya, I couldn’t agree with you more! I thought pillows were already fairly easy to make, but I will never look at placemats the same again…
      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Thanks! I love your deer pillow but when I went back to Target they didn’t have that one in stock. I thought the Joy pillow went really well with the others I already made though 🙂

  2. Great idea! I like the idea of pillow covers because then you don’t have a million stuffed pillows to store, but these are just too cute. And for the price? Gifts galore! =]

  3. I would have never thought to it that way! How awesome!!! I’ve got to go find some now to finish off the family room before our big holiday part.

  4. I love these!!! I’m thinking about heading to Wal-Mart, umm, now, to go find placemats! I hate the pillows on our sofa so I just may be DIYing a replacement or two!
Thanks for sharing on Twirl & Take a Bow! 🙂

    1. haha, our sofa looks like the pillows took over and Bailey {our dog} always moves them out of the way but then lays her head on them. I definitely have a pillow problem, but I’m good at alternating them at least, ha.

  5. Katie, these are so adorable! I love that you have this comprehensive tutorial too. Thank you so much for sharing, I am featuring at Redoux tomorrow!
