This coffee table was purchased a while back at a thrift shop and quickly became victim to my painted stencil obsession, which I wasn’t a huge fan of. However, the table was pushed aside once the new kids on the block, a.k.a the pallet planked coffee tables, took over.

I finally decided it was time to give it a new look. I wanted a planked, farmhouse style look so I measured the table top and then purchased a piece of wood from Home Depot that was then cut into 6 equal boards. You can also buy the boards individually. I then used one of my favorite staining techniques on the wood – the vinegar/steel wool/tea method, which you can read about here.

I lightly sanded down the coffee table and then painted it with 2 coats of homemade chalk paint. I created a white wash effect on top of the stained boards by lightly dabbing a dry brush into some white paint, wiping it off on a paper towel and then covering certain sections in a somewhat sporadic fashion.

Once dry I waxed the table to keep it protected.

Afterwards I added metal brackets that I spray painted with Rustoleum’s Rubbed Oil Bronze and also lightly sanded and then spray painted the bottom metal sections of the legs so they would match the brackets.

I glued the boards down using wood glue, and also added nails along the top edge. The finishing touch was the metal brackets, which were screwed in.

Here is the planked farmhouse style coffee table all transformed and ready to be admired. Best of all, I spent less than $15 sprucing it up!

So, what do you think of it’s new look?

    1. Hi Cheryl! I really enjoy the steel wool/vinegar stain. If you are looking for a way to darken some wood but don’t care so much about the exact shade then it’s a great way to go. I just used the method again to “stain” our wedding wands. Plus it’s not as messy 🙂

  1. Great transformation! It brings such an airy feeling to the room. I love the way you styled it as well, the candlesticks and flowers complement it perfectly. I have a big brown block coffee table I’m dying to do something similar to 🙂

    1. Thank you Lusine! Don’t tell anyone but I may have cut a couple flowers off a bush in the apartment complex, haha. I’m pretty sure anyone that saw me walking around with scissors thought I was a total creeper, lol. Of course a couple hours later my cat was caught eating them, which is the reason I can’t keep real flowers in the first place 🙁

  2. I love the finally transformation with the pallets. Great job! I can’t believe you only spent $15. Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
