I’m so excited to be participating in the 2014 fall home tour this week, along with 35+ other bloggers!  I have never done any type of home tour before so I was super nervous, but hope you will find some fall inspiration.

So go grab a cozy blanket and some coffee and welcome to our humble abode!

When it comes to decorating for fall I try to use items that can easily be left up or tweaked for Christmas. I mostly shopped our home to decorate and also LOVE using natural elements, which is great because those items are usually free. Plus I love the way textures combine with patterns and colors to create an interesting and layered space.

Decorating a rented house

Okay so here is the deal, we are renting and I’ll admit that I don’t feel like any of the rooms are “finished”, although I’ve been working hard lately to try and complete some projects that have been on my to-do list for a tad too long.  It’s strange because I usually decorate our home as soon as we move in, but it’s been a little more difficult this time. I guess because we know we will be moving, and this time it may even be cross country. {Update: We are actually going to be moving into an RV to travel full time for a year, which you can read about here!}

Even so, I’m a huge believer that you should make your home cozy no matter how long you will be staying there. So even if it doesn’t get “finished” until our lease is up, at least we can enjoy it until then 🙂

I love all sorts of styles and find it difficult to commit to just one. I love all things rustic but also get excited over anything mountain-inspired, coastal, farmhouse, vintage, whimsical, and modern. So um… yeah trying to combine all of those styles can sometimes be difficult.

However, I try not to limit myself too much and instead just mix and match all of the styles, because in the end, they all make me happy. So yes I {currently} live in Georgia but have ship helms on our gallery wall, along with all sorts of woodland-inspired art and decor, vintage finds, farmhouse decor, and upcycled projects. Rustic? Eclectic? Transitional? I don’t know what my style is called, but I try to create a space that feels comfortable, happy, not too serious and creative.

2014 Fall Home Tour

It was super overcast when I took these photos, and I’m still learning how to use my camera, but here is the entryway of our home. You may recognize a lot of projects here, especially if you follow me on Instagram. Pretty much everything in this space was thrifted or DIYed, and you may recognize my painted “let’s be adventurers” sign. I recently had that above our copper pipe desk but decided to move it into the entryway instead. Check out the pictures from our fall home tour:

We recently had a tree fall down in our backyard so I upcycled some of the branches and you will see those throughout our home as well. Here is another shot of my fabric tape mason jar lid pumpkin.

I added the John Muir quote, “Going to the woods is going home” onto a wood slice and added a frame around it for a bit of whimsy. I love that quote and hopefully someday {soon} the hubs and I will have our own home up in the mountains, surrounded by the forest.

Here is the view of our massive gallery wall in the living room. The ceilings are so high in this room that I wanted to make that wall the focal point, and fill it up with all sorts of frames and art. It’s a work in progress but I decided to give it a go or it would never get done.

Those curtains were my very first DIY post, can you believe it!? They are just tablecloths from Target hanging from a rod I made out of copper pipe {that I painted}. I plan to switch them out for some simple white curtains in the future but until then they get the job done.

Oh and does that rug look familiar?  It’s my sharpie rug and I recently moved it from my craft room and I love it in here! I generally prefer neutrals for fall but decided to keep my pops of turquoise and just add more browns and orange by using natural elements like twigs and pumpkins. I will probably add warmer layers as it gets colder outside.

It’s strange because looking at these photos I feel like the room is exploding with stuff, although it doesn’t really feel that way in person. I guess because the room is so big it still feels pretty open. It was also pretty rainy and overcast when I took these photos so the room is darker than usual.

For some quick fall art, I simply drew on a chalk-painted canvas after seeing this free printable from Rooms for Rent.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any real mini pumpkins {still too early?} so I used painted faux ones, but will probably change those out later on. Oh, and the mercury glass pumpkin was found at Home Goods.

I made the chalkboard tray last year before our wedding and we used it to display our signature drinks. To update it for fall I just wrote “thankful” on it and love how simple it looks. Not to mention I can easily tweak it for the seasons.

Oh and if you are looking for some magazines with fall decor ideas, here are two for you to check out. Did I mention I’m featured in both of them? Eeeeek! So exciting! You should be able to find them at Barnes and Noble.

For our fall tablescape I was going for woodland-inspired, enchanting, rustic, and of course a bit whimsical.

To create the look I gilded up some faux pears and then created little flags that say “give thanks” on one side and the person’s name on the other. You can view the easy tutorial for my “give thanks” place setting here.  I also sliced up some branches at varying heights and added an eclectic mix of upcycled bottles filled with moss, wheat, lotus pods, and faux billy balls. The mini faux pumpkins were either painted or fabric taped up 🙂

And of course, I LOVE my painted bear! I had no budget for art so I looked at a painting I wish I could buy, and then made my own version {which isn’t nearly as good}. I know it may be unconventional to have him hanging in the dining room, and hey may resemble more of a terrier or hamster, but I still love him!

    1. Thanks Ariean! Yeah, well we figure we will just have to cover up any nail holes and maybe do some touch ups, but it’s totally worth it to be able to enjoy a space that feels personal to us 🙂 Thanks so much for including me in the tour!

  1. I almost don’t even have words. So so so lovely. My nature loving self is dying and my creative color side is dying. You have put so much love and personality into your home, it’s stunning. When can I come over and sit at that gorgeous table!!

  2. Oh man Katie, I spent so long looking at your pretty pictures cause you have so many amazing projects throughout your home! Your fall touches are perfect especially in the dining room! And hooray..you found cotton and pumpkins!!!!

    1. Thanks Corey! I stalk your home so I guess it as about time you get to stalk mine a bit, haha. Yeah, the cotton may not have been exactly what I had in mind {I had to clean it up a bit}, but it was slim pickings {I got the last 3 branches they had!}, and I still love how organic it looks. I did find the large pumpkins at Kroger and Publix like you had mentioned, but never found mini pumpkins so I used some small squash on our sofa table. Of course 2 days after this post went live I saw that Home Depot got their mini pumpkins in. Go figure 🙂

  3. Oh my goodness Katie! You’re house is AHHHHMAZING!!! It’s ALL just SO stunning! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that massive gallery wall! I’m totally blown away by every single little detail! LOVE it all!!!

  4. Oh my gosh, I love it all!! We have way too many naked walls – you need to come help me fill them up! Did you make one of your couch pillows from Target place mats? It looks just like one I made for the craft room! But seriously, I love it all!

    1. Thanks Melissa. Oh geez we have so many place mat pillows throughout our home I lost count, lol, but yes there are 2 place mat pillows on the couch and one of them is from Target 🙂 Speaking of walls… your typography wall is so freaking amazing and genius and I love it soooooooo much! I cannot wait to see it all finished!

    1. Thanks so much Katie! I wasn’t sure if the photos translated well because to me the rooms look better in person and when I was looking back at the photos I felt like it looked like there was so much “stuff” and it felt cluttered. Maybe that’s just me being overly critical, but I love how it looks and feels in person so I guess that’s what’s most important 🙂 Thanks so much for your kind words and for stopping by!

  5. All I can say is WOW! Your house is absolutely stunning! I love everything you have done to decorate. I’m sure to you it may not be “done,” but you have done an amazing job of decorating! I may steal your quote about the woods for my own house:)

    1. Thanks so much Katie and you totally should! Besides I’m pretty sure you live more in the woods than I do, lucky! I’m just pretending for now 🙂 I saw that quote on some small wood slices a while back and instantly fell in love.

    1. Aww, thanks Aniko! Now if only I could work on my photography. I have the shakiest hands EVER and even some of my tripod photos turned up blurry. I tried to use the best ones I have, but I feel like my lighting is a bit off so I gotta work on that too. Time to stalk your blog for more photography tips!

  6. I love your fall decorations! Especially the bear on the chalkboard in the dining room-so cute!

  7. I love it Katie! Your home is gorgeous and you have boundless creativity – everywhere I look in the photos there are AMAZING and inspiring things that you created, not bought, which is so neat and one of the things that really makes your blog so special and original!

    1. Thank you so much Brynne, that is the sweetest comment ever and just made my day! So even if being frugal has led us to so many DIY projects, it is worth it to look around and know that we have a unique space that shows our personality 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by!

  8. Everything is so, so gorgeous! You have put so much work and love into this space – like hundreds of DIYs. I love it! You are so inspiring. (And thanks so much for including my little printable – I love how you framed it horizontally!)

    1. Thanks Alexis! I actually planned on taking another photo of your printable because all the ones I took came out blurry because my hands shake too much and I somehow tend to ruin photos even taken on the tripod, haha. I LOVE your printable though and it’s so perfect on our wall, so thank you for sharing it! Oh and I also can’t believe how perfectly it printed in my home printer! So I didn’t even have to go out and get it printed, love that!

  9. Your house is SO GORGEOUS, warm and inviting. I LOVE all the DIY’s. I have those same “curtains” from target!! Can’t wait to check out more of your blog!

  10. Hi Katie! I love your house tour. The colors and everything are so pretty. I can’t believe how beautiful and finished it looks, and it’s a rental!! You are amazing. Also, all your DIYs are gorgeous and so inspiring. I can’t even believe everything you have made for your space!

I also wanted to let you know that I’m featuring you this week on Link It or Lump It. Thank you so much for participating in our link party – you can grab an “I Was Featured” button if you like – http://www.lovelywren.com/link-it-or-lump-it-58-and-features/
