Looking to incorporate natural remedies into your lifestyle? Essential Oils are an easy and effective way to do just that. While I’ve used essential oils off and on over the years, I didn’t start using them regularly until the beginning of this year.

Getting a diffuser has definitely made it easier to create a ritual and use them daily. In fact, I’m so obsessed with it that I take it with me if I head out of town, haha.

I’ll generally turn it on first thing in the morning, use it in the afternoon, and also use it right before we go to bed. If you’re looking for a super-easy way to begin incorporating essential oils into your everyday life, I highly recommend getting a diffuser.

Six of My Favorite Single Essential Oils

New to essential oils? One thing to keep in mind is that essential oils are extremely potent and sniffing from the bottle doesn’t always give a clear indication of whether or not you’ll like it. There are some oils I smelled and thought, ummmm, no thanks! Then I’d fall in love with it after diffusing or mixing it with other oils. And don’t forget essential oils are more than their aromas, each has its own set of therapeutic advantages.

Once you see the benefits a single or blend of oils has on your mind, body, and spirit, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start using them sooner. The good news is that it’s never too late, and you don’t need a box full of oils to get started either!

Today I’m sharing 6 of my favorite single essential oils that I frequently use. At first, I thought this was going to be an easy post, but I have so many favorites! I use a mixture of single and synergy blends, but today I’m going to focus on a few of my favorite single essential oils. I’m sure some of these will change as I continue to experiment, but here’s my list as of now.

By the way, I generally use Eden’s Garden or Plant Therapy because their prices are affordable, and I love the quality of their oils, but I think it’s a good idea to research and experiment with different brands until you find what works for you. I’ve linked to Amazon for most of the oils I use because I love using Prime, but if you want to use Eden’s Garden and create your own “set” you may be better off going through their website to pick and choose the oils you want.

Keep in mind that not all essential oils are pet or kid-friendly so be sure to do your research before using specific oils.

Peppermint

When I think of peppermint I generally think of candy canes and Christmas. At least, that’s what I used to think of. Over the last year Peppermint Oil has proven to be one of my absolute favorite and most used essential oils. Eric’s family just so happens to farm and distill mint so back when we were in Wisconsin they gave us a bottle, which we used to keep mice out of our RV. Yes, it worked and I was immediately sold.

Peppermint essential oil is also a natural remedy for relieving headaches. I had a really intense migraine one day but we were all out of Ibuprofen so out of desperation I finally decided to give peppermint a try. I honestly didn’t think it would work, but it did and now this is one of those oils I keep in my purse. If you start feeling a headache coming on just take a few deep inhales of peppermint essential oil and I think you’ll be amazed at the benefits. You could also add a few drops to a cotton ball or in an inhaler. I just inhaled straight from the bottle every few minutes and within 10 minutes I forgot I even had a headache. Now I rarely ever use Ibuprofen. I also have a 4 oz amber glass bottles filled with peppermint and rosemary that I mist into the air if I’m not feeling so hot.

Do you get car sick? I am one of those that’s prone to it, but mostly on windy roads through the mountains. Ya know, the mountains where I want to eventually settle down and live, and where we plan to spend most of our RV travels, ha! I recently told Eric that I’m gonna have to figure out how to avoid getting car sick if we’re ever going to move to the mountains. After doing some research I found that peppermint oil can actually help with this too! Yup, you can take a few whiffs 30 minutes before you get in the car and then take a few more whiffs throughout the drive. I tried it and it worked. I also avoided my phone, ate something beforehand, and kept my eyes on the road ahead of me, so I know it was a combination of things, but any time I felt nausea coming on I just inhaled some peppermint oil and felt relief. Mind Blown.

Side note: Whatever you do, DON’T get Peppermint essential oil on your hands or fingers and then touch your face or eyes. It’s not fun. Trust me, I know from experience.

Five years ago I would’ve told you I’m not a fan of lavender, and then one day my mom gave me a bottle and I fell in love. Any time I feel overwhelmed and stressed, all I need is a couple inhales of lavender essential oil to make my body and mind feel more at ease. Lavender not only provides instant relaxation, but it’s great for skin and allergies too. Use it in the diffuser, mix it with a little bit of coconut oil and rub it on the bottom of your feet before bedtime, or use it to make your own deodorant. The options are endless!

Looking for a calming room spray or something to spritz your bedding and pillows with before bed? Add 10 drops of lavender to a small glass spray bottle (I like the 2 or 4 oz bottles), fill the rest up with distilled water, and then shake it before using. You can add more or less drops of lavender essential oil or mix in any other oils you love.

Another essential oil that’s great for bringing calm into your life is Clary Sage. It’s a soothing and balancing oil and one that I especially use during, ahem, that special time of the month. It’s so funny because during that time, Eric will often run around and be like, where’s that oil so we can put it in the diffuser! haha.

This is a much softer scent and in my opinion, it blends well with almost anything, although I also love it by itself.

Feeling a bit scattered or grumpy? Bergamot has a soft citrus scent and promotes calm, but with clarity and focus. It blends well with almost anything if you ask me, which is probably why I go through so much! I’ll diffuse it during the day to help with anxiety, or at night before bedtime. Definitely a must have!

I’m all about citrus scents, especially in the morning and afternoon because they’re uplifting and energizing. While Sweet Orange is a bit too tart for me to use on it’s own, I love diffusing it with Clary Sage or more woodsy scents like Earth and Wood. With so many orange essential oils, it can be confusing which direction to go. If you’re looking for a fresh, sweet, pick me up then you may want to give Sweet Orange a try. I have yet to try Wild and Blood Orange, but those are on my list to try next.

I don’t know what’s better than the smell of evergreens. It’s hard for me to pick my favorite conifer essential oil but I love the fresh, earthy scent of Fir Needle. White fir may be a close second because it’s just slightly more subtle. This is a grounding oil that reminds me of walking through a forest. I often pair it with Bergamot but also like it with Lavender, or Lavender and Sweet Orange.
