2014 Rustic Woodland Inspired Christmas

Update: You can view our newer Home Tours here.

Christmas is less than a week away, can you believe it? I can’t, in fact, I just finished sending out our holiday cards this weekend. I also still have presents to wrap, since the only ones I’ve wrapped are those I had to ship off to family that doesn’t live nearby. I did a lot of last-minute shopping this past week and weekend and boy am I exhausted! So are you ready for Christmas?

This whole month is going a little too quick for me and I haven’t even shared any of the new holiday crafts I worked on, woops.

Well, if you follow me on Instagram you may have seen a few photos of our home. I originally didn’t plan on doing a home tour this year just because I decorated a bit later than usual, and getting the flu definitely threw things off a bit.

Well, I finally decided to take some photos of our home to share, but of course, once I made that decision the sun decided to go on vaycay so all I really have are some night time photos. I’ll try to take some more before of other parts of our home before Christmas (if the sun comes out in the next 3 days) but at least you can snoop around our house a bit to see what I’ve been up to lately. You may spy quite a few DIYs scattered about, and some of the free printables I offer here as well.

You may already know how much Eric and I love the mountains and well anything rustic, so that’s what our decor is inspired by. And of course, I had to sprinkle in a touch of whimsy. I wanted our home to feel warm and cozy as if you walked into a rustic lodge or cabin.

So put on your favorite Christmas music and grab a cup of hot cocoa. Welcome to our home 🙂

When you come through the garage you pass the laundry room and breakfast nook and can see into the dining and family room. So this is just past the breakfast nook and in between our kitchen and bedroom. You can see our dining room to the left with a little glimpse of my wood slice wall art.

The DIY twig star wreath I made last year is currently hanging up on the wall across from our breakfast nook, along with some cute vintage style wall art I found on clearance.

If you pass the breakfast nook and go into the dining room, you can see the DIY chalkboard I made from an upcycled cabinet door.

And on the other side of the wall (in the dining room) is a new cardholder I made from a thrifted frame and some baker’s twine.

When you walk out of the dining room and look to the left you will see a paper mache deer I decoupaged with some black and white buffalo plaid fabric, which was then hung inside a thrifted frame. It’s not perfect, but I still <3 him.

The fabric was originally going to be the garland on our tree (sort of a happy accident) and I had even cut it into strips, but I then decided I wanted just a little more garland. Of course, the local JoAnn’s didn’t have any of that fabric left so I ordered more online only to find out 4 days later that my order had been canceled because they ran out before they could process it, boooooooo.  So long story short I used some black and white plaid ribbon ordered on amazon instead for the tree garland and then used the strips of fabric on the deer head. Who knows what I’ll do with the rest…

You can also see a little peek of the triangle accent wall in my craft room. That room is filled with crap rather than crafts right now,  so um let me go ahead and shut that door, haha. I promise to clean it soon! I told you I was messy...

This is looking back the other direction, towards the laundry room and garage door.

If you turn to the right you will see our foyer with my recently updated lampshade, painted mirror, DIY bench, placemat pillows, and DIY “Let’s Be Adventurers” sign.

The snowflakes are just flat ornaments taped onto the windows.

And this is what you see when you first come in the front door and pass the foyer. The photo below shows our massive gallery wall which is covered in DIY wall art, upcycled clockframed printables, and thrifted finds. I <3 plaid and moose. Can you tell? I also made the “Merry Everything” wood sign above our mantel.

I LOVE our DIY barnwood style sofa table that was made from thrown out bathroom cabinets from our previous apartment complex. Oh and the star on the tree looks crooked from here, but it’s straight from the couch, haha.

Rustic Christmas Tree with Buffalo Plaid Garland | MountainModernLife.comThis year I decided to keep our tree rustic and neutral and added a ton of new wood slice ornaments to those I had made last year, including a wedding photo ornament. You can also see the rustic tree ornament I made last year in the photo below.

I made a vintage-inspired Christmas sign that says “Merry Everything” this year. It was made using the same technique I did on this wood sign.

Oh, and I recently decided to go over my sharpie rug again while watching an episode of Property Brothers. It’s held up pretty nice but did seem to fade a bit over the past 10 months. Oh, and you may recognize our DIY planked coffee tables here too.

To add a little bit to our rustic woodland-inspired Christmas, my mom and I made the navy/green plaid and faux fur stockings this year. I <3 how they turned out! The chalkboard tray I made over a year ago has come in handy too, and I just wrote “fa la la” on it to help spread a little Christmas cheer through the home.

I had the tree on our coffee table for a few years and just wrapped a little pom pom trim around it for a bit of whimsy. The snow globe was a gift from my sister 🙂

The moose pillow was picked up from Kohls on clearance for $13, and the faux fur and plaid pillows were DIYed.

  1. Hello!

I’ve been struggling to find ‘the perfect sectional’ for our living room. It seems we have the same layout! Could you please let me know the brand/store yours is from? I would really appreciate it. Thanks, and happy holidays!
