Beach Inspired Console Table

I hope you had a great weekend! I organized my “workshop” area as working in an apartment can be challenging, and it’s easy to make a mess when you’re in such tight quarters. I’m happy to report that I am now more organized which makes working on projects a lot easier and a lot more fun.

Today I am sharing a beach-inspired console table. I’m going to call it a console table rather than a sofa table simply based on the fact that I now have it against a wall, rather than behind the sofa. Does anyone know the real difference?

Here are some before photos:

Even though I used homemade chalk paint on this project, I did lightly sand the top because of the scratches that were on it. It also needed a little wood filler but since I was all out I just mixed a little bit of the sanding bits with some wood glue and made my own “wood filler”. After that I did a little more sanding.

I knew I wanted to create layers of paint on this piece so I started off with a quick coat of white chalk paint. I didn’t need it to look perfect because the purpose of the white paint was to peek through when I sanded through the layers of paint. The photo below shows one coat of white paint and then the other photo is after one coat of a custom blue paint I mixed.

I ended up painting on 2 layers of the custom blue paint and sanded in between each coat of paint to give it that distressed look. Afterward, it was still a little brighter than I wanted so I added a layer of whitewash paint {white paint mixed with water} and then wiped the piece down and did my last bit of sanding.

Here is my beach-inspired table all finished.  I ended up moving my nautical vignette over to be displayed with the table (check out my post and beach sign tutorial here). I plan on doing a lot more shifting of furniture over the next week or so to bring that summer feel more into our living room.

Please ignore the awful fake flowers, ugh they make me cringe!

I just love the texture that the layers of paint and distressing gives the table. So what do you think?

    1. Hi Brittany! I’m not the type to like really curvy tables like this one, and had originally planned on selling it, but I just love the way it turned out so I now plan to keep it. It’s a bonus that my fiance likes it too 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Hi Ingrid! this table is just the beginning, our living room is getting turned upside down while I give it a summer makeover. Luckily, my fiance is used to it… and patient. Haha.

  4. Wow…that is one super transformation! You did an amazing job! I think that I am pretty crafty, but I don’t think I would’ve had the vision on this one! It really is dreamy! Ps- My cats eat my flowers too! Naughty kitties!

    1. So happy you like it! I actually want to find a “straighter” console table and do the same thing to it, and I’m redoing our coffee table to match 🙂 I’d love to see your makeover when you’re done 🙂

  5. I love anything beachy and don’t worry about the fake flowers. We all have some of those that have seen better days, although I think yours don’t look bad in the photo. An amazing transformation!

  6. Such a great curvy table and the color sets it off perfectly. Are the colors you used for your custom outcome a secret recipe? My problem is I tend to mix colors and rarely know what I used or how much. Would love to hear what you mixed together if you don’t mind sharing!
    Liz

    1. Hi Liz! Nope, no secret but I don’t have an exact recipe either. I actually just mixed a turquoise oops paint with some grey oops paint and then added some mint acrylic paint 🙂 I made a decent amount of the color in a small paint can, and then used it to make a small batch of chalk paint in a separate jar. That way I can make more chalk paint from the same color later if I need to. After that I added some white oops paint to some water {half paint/half water} for the whitewash. It seems like every time I head to Home Depot or Lowes I leave with at least one can of oops paint. I think I may have a problem, lol. Hope this helps!

    1. Thanks Karen! I now want this look on everything, haha. Of course my mom said the first thing she noticed is that this table is smirking and now that’s all I see!

  10. WOW…beautifully done!!! Totally in love with the color of blue you created! I just won the bid on a similar piece at an auction last week that I plan on using as a console table in our condo rehab project! You have given me a wonderful inspiration piece! Thank you!!! 1. Hi Vicki! I actually ran out of wax and need to order some online {I want to try out something other than what they carry at home depot or lowes}, so I ended up using polycrylic 🙂 Hope you’re having a great weekend!

  14. This looks amazing! I love the color and nautical vignette! I’m going to have to try this whitewash, I have a tendency of picking out colors that are a little too bright :). And I didn’t even notice the fake flowers until you mentioned them, there are so many beautiful aspects to the photo that draw your eye first.

  15. What a beautiful table – love the finish! And your whole vignette is lovely!
