Twinkling Lights, Greenery, and Cozy Blankets

If I had to narrow my holiday decor down to three things I’d make it twinkling lights, lots of greenery, and cozy blankets.

We prefer to keep things simple and mix in a lot of rustic, non-holiday items we can keep up year-round if we want. And while we have a decently sized Christmas bin we keep stored in the RV basement storage, we also use live greenery that we don’t have to worry about storing, including our Christmas tree.

Tip: Did you know you can snag tree trimmings for FREE at Home Depot or Lowe’s? You may be able to do this at any Christmas tree farm so I’d just ask. For the last 3 years, I’ve picked up the free greenery to make or fill in faux wreaths, garland, and stick in various jars throughout our home. I love that it’s free, pretty, smells amazing, and then I can toss it out after the holidays!

By the way, we’re currently camp hosting so we’ll be staying put until after the holidays, which means we don’t have to worry about constantly packing up our extra holiday decorations. That’s why this year we decided to pick up two Christmas trees, one for inside and one for out.

We enjoyed our first experience cutting down our own Christmas trees in the National Forest this year and it was soooooo much fun! The permits were only $10 per tree and we definitely plan to make this a new tradition.

My first attempt Flocking a Christmas Tree

This was also my first year attempting to flock a Christmas tree using sno-flock. While I love a natural, green Christmas tree, I also love the idea of a snow-covered tree and figured it would be a fun way to bring the snow to our front yard. You can check out our post and video on how to flock a Christmas tree here.

Simple Wood “Tree Skirt”

We left our DIY galvanized tree skirt in storage the last time we visited Georgia, so this year we decided to make a super easy, rustic “tree skirt” using random wood we had leftover from Eric’s family’s farm. It’s just a couple boards nailed to one another that I stained. There’s no bottom, the tree stand just sits inside it and we made one for outside and one for inside. I love how simple and rustic they are, plus they should keep the pets from drinking the water.

Side note: you’ll notice our lights may look a bit rough on the flocked tree, haha. We need to make some adjustments, but if you have a heavily flocked (and not super full) Christmas tree, you may want to consider using white cabled lights.

Eric’s great-grandpa made that tiny stool back in the day, so it was fun to incorporate it into our outdoor space.

You may recognize the rustic pillows I made last year. I sprayed them with Scotchguard Outdoor Shield and love the pop of color they bring outside.

The only real garland we used this year, is the cedar garland you see around our front door. It came from Home Depot, but I heard Trader Joe’s has some awesome and affordable garland, I was just too impatient to make the hour drive out there.

Last year we used all real garland inside the RV but it dried out pretty fast, especially with the humidity we deal with inside the motorhome. This year we decided to go with faux garland I snagged for 70% off at Michaels and while I’m good with the faux garland inside, nothing beats the real thing!

I was nervous about hanging anything on the exterior of our RV and didn’t know if command hooks would ruin the paint, so we used wreath suction cups and they worked perfectly! We used a smaller suction cup on the window to hold our wreath.

Tip: Use suction cups to hang decor along the outside of your camper – larger ones work better for heavier decor.

I love our simple and cozy outdoor space and am ready to hang out and enjoy some cocoa.

Cabin-Inspired RV Holiday Decor

We wanted to keep things pretty neutral and simple so the only holiday-specific decorations we purchased this year were the garland, some extra fairy lights, and LOTS of batteries. We’ll be using rechargeable batteries next year, that’s for sure.

How cute is McNally? And I love his crazy, grinchy fur too, haha.

Speaking of grinchy, I love our crooked, grinchy tree this year! We still plan to add some ornaments, but I’m enjoying it as-is.

And you may notice we squeezed in our Christmas tree sign from Harper & Grayce. This was the only place we could fit it, but I think it’s perfect. You’ll also see real greenery scattered around, but the garland around our slide-outs and the mini trees above our media cabinet are fake.

I wanted to keep the kitchen pretty simple and loved the idea of adding greenery to the canisters, which I saw from 320 Sycamore.

Eric had the idea of using battery-operated lights around the map in our bedroom and I LOVE it! In fact, this is going to be staying up after the holidays. The battery pack is just stuck to the side of the map with velcro.

And I couldn’t help but add this photo of Duckie. He let me take this photo, then shook the hat off and walked away, likely mumbling something I shouldn’t repeat.

  1. You guys, this looks so amazing! I love that you incorporated your outdoor space too. We unfortunately have to pack up Dec 18th, so we went lightweight this year to make it easy for take down & set up. Can’t wait to see everyone else’s posts!

    1. Thanks Celena! We didn’t get to decorate our outdoor space last year since we were moving right before Christmas, which is why I was excited to take advantage of it this year. Eric and I almost went back out for another tree to flank the left side, hahaha.

  2. The picture of your cat cracks me up! 😄 😻 I love how the tree turned out – like it’s a white Christmas already! Also I am seriously eyeing that garland from Michael’s….I wanted to get real greenery this year but was worried about it drying out and raining evergreen needles onto my husband while he works at his desk, so decided to stick with my cheap Walmart garland, but now I’m reconsidering….

    1. Well if you’re looking at the greenery above our door outside, that’s real cedar, but the garland inside is fake. I felt good about our fake garland until we put the real stuff up outside. You just can’t beat the real stuff, but we’re still finding cedar sprigs inside our RV after using it inside last Christmas, haha. And based on the photo I saw, I don’t think our fake stuff looks any better than yours 🙂

    1. Thanks Amanda! I had no idea what I was doing with the flocking so I just tried a bunch of different methods, and had fun with it. Next time I think I’ll ask Eric to spray the tree with water while I sprinkle the snow on. Maybe then I won’t lose so much to the ground, ha!

  3. Spending Christmas in a camper sounds like an awesome way to enjoy time with family. Getting service in the mountains is easier now more than ever. It would also be so cool to see meteorites when you’re in the mountains. Your RV decoration is stunning.

    1. Thanks! Unfortunately, the only thing missing this year, is our family. We’re hoping next year we can convince them to meet us wherever we’re staying at the time.

  4. i always find inspiration in your style of renovations and decorating.
Love the wood interior window trim. How did you attach it? I fear damaging things that are hidden inside the walls.
    Merry Christmas!

    1. Hey Cindy! Sorry but I’m just now getting to comments on here. I know we’ve talked about this on FB though and that you watched the video, so keep us posted when you do your windows!

  5. Wow, you guys are amazing! LOVE the flocked tree and all the rest of your decorations. Really, really stunning! I would love to know what stain you used to achieve that gorgeous finish on the tree ‘skirts’. Oh, and the new window trim is awesome! That darling little tree between the captains chairs is perfect, too.

p.s. I’m not a cat person but I think I’d be tempted to commit dognapping if I ever met McNally in person! ***wink*** Adorable!

    1. Thanks Dori! The staining happened in the dark outside, but it’s my sloppy method similar to finger painting, haha. I follow no rules, use cheapo brushes, mix stains and add in taupe paint. I love the imperfect, rustic effect it has, plus it’s fun 🙂

  6. I LOVE the picture of Duckie! hahah! The home looks so cozy and great!! We’re so happy to partner with you on this, it’s been so fun seeing everyone’s decor! Keep up the great work~ Trinity and Kermit

    1. How did I miss this comments before Christmas? Woops! Yeah, duckie can be a bit of a dick (it always cracks me up when my phone autocorrects his name to Dickie) but he’s also a cuddle bug. I think he just gets jealous of McNally sometimes so I have to show him extra love, haha. Thanks for being a part of the series and I hope ya’ll enjoyed the holidays and are staying warm!

  7. I absolutely love your design ideas. I just got a travel trailer and am inspired by what you have done. I recently framed my house windows like you have in the trailer but my blinds fit inside the window frame. I want to do the same in the trailer but am stuck on how to attach the blinds. How are you guys planning on doing that. Thank you again for all your inspirations and have a wonderful holiday

    1. Hi Thea! We originally thought we would install the shades inside the frame, or use cables or tension rods with curtains, but after installing the actual frames we’re considering installing the shades to the top piece of wood, or even adding another piece of wood above that (if there’s space). We put it off during the holidays but should be getting to that in the next couple weeks (fingers crossed) and will share a post or video with whatever direction we decide to go 🙂

  8. I love your indoor Christmas tree. It’s exactly what I’m looking for – where did you get it, please?

    1. Hey Ashley we actually found that tree in the El Dorado National Forest – you can watch this video – https://youtu.be/qjVZ54rT6zE – we put together and it talks all about how to do it. That was our first year getting a tree from a national forest but it is supposed to be really good for the forests and is generally 5-10 dollars for the permit. Now I’m not going to lie it does take some hunting through the woods to find the perfect one haha but we had such a great time searching. Anyway I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
