Have you ever had a room so messy that the thought of someone else seeing it made you cringe? Or been embarrassed when someone opened the door to a room or closet filled with crap you were trying to hide until you umm…got around to cleaning it? If not then consider yourself lucky, and try not to judge me for the photo I’m about to share…

YIKES! Yes, that was my office/craft room about a month ago and no it does not represent a creative workspace. I don’t know what happened, I’m not that messy I promise! Or am I…

I think what happened is I stopped using that room as my office after I built the double copper pipe desk that was put in our bedroom, and then this room kinda became the “someone is stopping by, throw everything in there real quick!” room. Haha. It didn’t help that Eric took the storage shelf he built for it into our bedroom either. Yeah, I’ll just blame him for this disaster 🙂

Oh boy, I am embarrassed but ya know what, it’s okay because it doesn’t look like that anymore. Whew!

We recently decided to renew our lease for an additional year which helped motivate me. So I started cleaning the room up and turning it back into a functional space where I can work, craft, feel inspired, and get creative.

There are still a decent number of projects I need to do in here, but I wanted to share the progress that’s been made.

Also, I’m sad to report that my cat got sick ALL over my whimsical faux fur chair, boooooooooo. Now it needs to get re-upholstered so I moved 2 of our dining room chairs into the room for now.  They have navy cushions we made for them to match our dining room, but they don’t match my craft room so you can ignore that.

Oh, and I LOVE those vintage-industrial chairs but they are not that practical if you are going to be sitting in them for several hours at a time. Even with the cushions doubled up it can get uncomfortable. So I think they are great as dining chairs…just not as office chairs.

If you follow me on Facebook you may have noticed I’ve been swooning over these emerald lydia chairs from World Market.

They are out of my budget though, so I’ve been on the lookout for some chairs I can re-do because I want to have 2 matching chairs in the office. I just so happened to come across 4 dining chairs this weekend that I’m super excited about, and you may have seen them if you follow me on Instagram:

They are actually pretty gross and need some work, but I’m excited to see how they turn out! I ordered the fabric online yesterday {yay!} and can’t wait to transform these babies! Yes, there will be tufting 🙂

Anyway, here are some photos of my creative workspace as of now. Just about everything in this room was thrifted, upcycled or DIYed in some way, and I will update this post with the DIY post links once they are available.

Creative Workspace Tour: Part 1

I wanted this creative workspace to feel happy and whimsical with a mix of vintage, industrial chic, and modern rustic.

I recently made the gold leaf abstract art, although I’m thinking of framing it out soon. Oh and the other frame just has some wallpaper in it from Target, which you can see in the basket.

You may have recently seen the thrifted armoire I transformed. I LOVE how my printer fits perfectly inside, along with other things. The large basket was a HomeGoods find, as were the boxes on top of the armoire, and the storage organizer to the right. #homegoodshappy

Oh, and by the way, I am pretty much obsessed with my DIY pom pom curtains.

My thrifted lamp looks super huge in the photo below, haha. I think it’s the angle? Oh, and my rug is just faux fur fabric on top of an Ikea anti-slip rug underlay. I actually plan to make that “Dreams are worth chasing” into a marquee sign here soon, and you may remember my fabric deer from our Christmas home tour.

You can see my DIY fabric pinboard below.

I showed you how I made the triangle accent wall for less than $3 here, and you may also recognize my DIY fabric pinboard or wood slice thumbtacks.

You may recall the giant chalkboard from this post. Anyone else a fan of The Big Bang Theory? 🙂 Oh and I need to clean those pipes, but I sure do love my copper pipe desk! I recently moved that desk into this room and then moved the rustic industrial desk into our bedroom.

The coffee filter garland was from our wedding, the giraffe was an old drawing I did in college, you can see the ampersand art here, and I recently made the “Creativity is contagious” canvas using my handy dandy Silhouette machine.

I still need to deal with the cords from my computer and lamp and also plan on making a new light fixture for this room. I recently made a large sign out of pallet wood and plywood to match my Upcycled Treasures header/logo. I really like how it turned out and it reminds me that this room probably wouldn’t exist if I never started this blog 🙂

I love that I now that all the extra space on the desk to craft, draw or do whatever my heart desires 🙂

Oh and remember my West Elm-inspired gold pipe storage system? I LOVE that thing!

Well, it’s definitely an improvement from what it was, don’t you think? Not that it would have taken much to improve it, haha.

I would say it is a creative workspace now. This is my favorite room in our home and it’s fun to make projects that can reflect my personality without worrying about it being too girly for Eric. I still have more organizing to do, some labels to make, and a few more layers of projects I’d like to add, but we will see when that all happens…

So what do you think of the creative workspace? Could your craft room use some organizing? Hopefully, you feel inspired.

    1. Thanks Alexis! I actually saw the rug idea on View Along the Way {http://www.viewalongtheway.com/2014/05/diy-faux-fur-rug/} and I just haven’t posted about it yet. I didn’t even put velcro in the corners and it seems to stay really well, but that’s probably because my desk is on top. Soooooo much cheaper with just the fabric and I love it! Of course our pets think it’s just an oversized pet bed for them to roll around on, haha.

  1. Stupendous job! (insert hearty applause.) I bet that feels SO good just going in a sitting at your desk looking around (when you have a quiet moment). I love your blog related sign. What a cool way to commemorate your hard work and passions. You’ve inspired me to do something similar because I love this fun blogging adventure and where it has lead me. cheers!

    1. Thanks Karisa and it’s definitely nice to come in here to work and feel inspired. Having things organized definitely helps me think a lot clearer too. I LOVE how my sign turned out and can’t wait to see what you do!

  2. Well, so many things to comment on here! First off, everything looks just wonderful. I instantly was drawn to the coffee filter garland! You need to share the how to on that beauty. And your new printer armoire is perfection. Saw you guys decided to do another year in GA, no big move to Cali yet?

    1. Thank you Amy! Yes, that garland is on my super long list of projects I still need to post, haha. I’m such a bad blogger. As for California…. that was a tough call but after visiting again I think it finally hit me how far away we would be from family and since we would like to get preggers in the next year or two we don’t know if moving is the best decision right now. We still want the mountains so we have our eyes set on NC so we can be in between my family and his. A lot could happen in a year though so I guess we’ll see…..

  3. I’ve really been needing some motivation / a kick in the pants to get my craft space in gear. Your space looks so amazing; it’s totally the kick I need! Thanks for linking up at Creative Spark; I’m featuring your workspace tour today!

  4. This space is so amazing! I think my favorite part {besides that armoire, of course} is your huge Upcyled Treasures sign! Thanks for linking up at The Creative Circle! I hope you’ll join us again this week!

  5. I’m just now reading this post- over a year after the fact- and it has motivated me to clean up my own mess! I created my “sewing room/office” this past fall when I retired by turning a closet into shelves for files, etc., organized it all, made it pretty with a gallery wall and by covering the drawers of a chest with my favorite fabrics and put in a new white and black striped rug from West Elm. Wellllllllllll, the rug got quickly stained and was too hard to clean (and it was way too expensive to have it done), so I gave it away and our cat has destroyed two of the covered drawers and papers have just taken over, PLUS I realize the gallery wall is in back of me so I can’t really enjoy it. After I read this post, I looked up and thought- jeez lousie, this room needs a HUGE clean-up! I’ll use your idea of fabric for a rug because it’s much easier to wash fabric than clean a rug, put new fabric on the drawers, move my desk to the other side so I face the gallery wall and file all those papers. THEN, I’ll be happy to come into the room. Thanks for the kick in the pants!!

    1. Hi Penny,

Oh goodness I can’t even imagine the things I’d still have if our pets didn’t ruin them, ha! It sounds like you’ve got a great plan and I’d love to see it when you’re finished! As for this room, it’s practically empty now that we are moving in a few months so I’m going to have to figure out a way to have a tiny office/creative space in the RV 🙂

      Katie
