Let me start this post off by saying that in no way am I an artist or a painter, which is evident by the photos in this post. However, I do enjoy playing music and dancing around while I pretend to be. Who doesn’t?

DIY Abstract Canvas Art

Five years ago I made my first attempt at DIY abstract canvas art, and today I am sharing it with you. It was the year I thought it would be fun to send some DIY art to my family for Christmas. Only I never painted before, and well luckily my family is nice and said they loved them. Suuuuuuuureee.

It’s funny how our taste in home decor and even art can change over time, and if I was to paint something today I am sure it would be quite different. Yet there is something about this canvas art that I love. It’s probably just the fact that I made it… plus the texture is awesome. I love the texture!

I can’t exactly remember what I did for texture but I think there was a failed attempt to add a fabric tree, which I tried to rip off and when it didn’t come off completely I just painted over it. Haha. I actually liked the added texture it gave the canvas and then I also tossed some sand {I think?} into some of the acrylic paint.

I wanted to somewhat mimic another piece of art I had purchased for my birthday from Urban Home {I miss that store!}, and you can see part of it in the photo below.

What’s funny is I wanted this canvas art so bad I bought it without realizing I didn’t have a way to get it home. Luckily Eric drove a convertible at the time so I just drove down the 101 with the top down and my large canvas sticking out of it, haha.  My friend Ryan thought it was the most hideous thing ever and couldn’t understand why on earth I would buy it, or go through all the trouble to get it home. I didn’t care though because I loved it. Luckily Eric generally has the same taste as me. Or doesn’t really care. In fact, he would be cool with having framed Falcon’s jerseys all over the house.

So anyway, I wanted to create some of my own DIY art on canvas using more blues and greens with a hint of yellow. I’m not a huge fan of the circles, but do like that they were made from washers I had picked up at a hardware store.

What’s funny about this abstract art is I have been wanting to make a wooden frame for it for 5 years! Well, I am happy to announce that last week Eric and I used our Kreg Jig for the first time and built a frame with it, yay! We plan to build bigger projects over time, but felt this would be a good starting point. I am seriously in love with the Kreg Jig now and so is Eric,

If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen a photo similar to this one last week:

Since we just moved and are still in the process of putting things away I will have to show you the framed canvas art in a later post. It may have taken us 5 years to frame it, but it was worth it!

Have you created DIY abstract canvas art for your home? If not you definitely should. Even if you don’t like the outcome it is sure to be a lot of fun and very freeing. Plus ya never know, you may just discover the artist inside that you didn’t know was there.

Update: Here it is framed and up on our gallery wall:

  1. Oh, I love this painting. Everything about it is cool. I’d love to have something just like it in my house, but in purple. My mom is an artist and I have her paintings hanging all over my walls. I have made a few attempts and have 4 small pieces that I did myself hanging alongside hers. They pale in comparison, but it is so cool to say I made them.

    1. Wow, that is so neat that your mom is an artist and I love the idea of hanging your art next to hers! I’m terrible at painting real objects but enjoyed my attempt at abstract art. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Um, when we were moving from California to GA we had stuff listed on cl and some guy came over to buy a nightstand or something, saw the art and was like “I’ll give you $20 cash right now for that!”. Ummm… first off it wasn’t listed for sale and the canvas cost more than that, lol.

It was flattering he wanted to buy it, just not the price he wanted to pay, haha.

  2. Don’t say you are not an artist!! I really like the texture you use.
Just so you know, I do love my artwork from you.

  3. Wow. I’m a bit of an abstract art addict and I’ve spent hours looking at pieces. Yours is really good. I’d buy it. Don’t sell yourself short! I think you ARE an artist.
