I recently had a reader ask how I put together the yarn frame to display the vintage postcards during our wedding reception. For those of you that don’t know, we created a “time capsule box” for our wedding guestbook and had guests write on the back of vintage postcards, which we will open up and read on our 1-year anniversary {can’t wait!}. You can read more about our DIY time capsule box here. So today I am sharing how to create a DIY Yarn Clothespin Frame.

I realized I never posted this little DIY, and it’s seriously super easy to make and so versatile too! I only have a few “Before” photos of the original frame used, which was a thrifted frame I painted before attaching the yarn with a staple gun. You could also use the metal tabs on the back of a frame to tie the yarn {or rope, twine, etc.} to the frame, but honestly the easiest way to attach it is using THUMBTACKS! Yup.  It’s so much easier and works just as well. I still can’t believe how easy it is!

Here are the few photos I could find of the DIY yarn clothespin frame we used at our wedding:

And here are some photos of another yarn clothespin frame I recently whipped up in just a few minutes:

Basically all you do is remove the glass from your frame, and cut your yarn to the size you want so that it goes across the frame from one end to the other. You can then tie a knot at the ends of the yarn and attach it to the back of the frame using a thumbtack. You want to make sure it’s nice and tight so it doesn’t sag when you attach your photos or postcards to the yarn with clothespins. Once your yarn is all thumbtacked down, you can hang photos using clothespins.

That’s it, super easy huh? It really doesn’t take much time either which is nice, and you can even have fun with the design and cross the yarn or just go straight across.

Although we used this idea to display the vintage postcards for our guestbook, you could use the same idea to display engagement photos, escort tags, etc. and then after the wedding, you can use it to show off wedding photos or as a memo board.

I think the smaller clothespins work better, which you can buy from any craft store and you can even decorate those with paint, wash tape, or lace.

This project doesn’t take much time or cost much money, and you may even discover you have everything you need on hand!

Where I purchased our vintage postcards:

Since a lot of people have asked where I purchased our vintage postcards I wanted to mention that here as well. I purchased most of the postcards on eBay by searching “vintage postcards lot” or “lot of vintage postcards”, “romantic postcards”, etc. I am pretty sure I used about 20 different keywords, haha. I then emailed the sellers because some of the “lots” being sold had some blank postcards mixed in with some that were written on. So I would ask about how many were blank. I also wound up buying some vintage reproduction cards too off eBay just because I wanted to make sure I had more than enough and a wide variety to choose from. I still have some left, including the ones that were written on and actually really enjoyed reading the notes on the back – crazy to think most of them were written in the early 1900′s! You can also search Etsy or local antique shops, but I found eBay to be less expensive and have more options available – you just may need to keep an eye out for a week or 2.

I’m going to add this into the post too because I forgot to mention it and think I only have it on my post about the DIY Time Capsule Guest Book.

      Have a great week!

  1. This is such a fantastic idea and so versatile. It can be modified to fit any style, theme or occasion by simply changing the photos or even changing the type of frame used. Actually, it just came to mind that I have some large old frames in my basement I’m no longer using. Great upcycling project. Thanks for sharing!

  2. This is so great! I’m thinking of doing something similar for my wedding in France this May. Did you end up displaying the blank cards on the frame? Or did people hang them there after they wrote something? Wondering if I’ll have enough space for everyone to hang their completed cards.. What do you think?

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi Sarah,

Yes, we hung up the blank cards and then had a sign that asked our guests to place them inside our “time capsule box” after they wrote notes on them.

Now on our anniversary the hubs and I read through the postcards and it’s so much fun 🙂
