How is your Christmas decorating going? This is the first year that we ditched most of our usual ornaments and made our own to add a personal touch with a lodge feel. I have always dreamed of spending Christmas in a log cabin surrounded by snow, so I guess you could say that’s what I was inspired by this year.

So today I am excited to share some photos of our rustic cabin-inspired Christmas tree with you! I would show you the rest of our house but it’s kinda decorated with boxes since we are moving soon and had to start packing. Fun.

Rustic Cabin Inspired Christmas Tree

Despite moving and the fact that we will be out of town for Christmas, a real tree is a must for us! So here are the photos, enjoy!

Oh, and you may notice a lack of ornaments at the bottom of the tree, thanks to our fun-loving kitties that think the bottom ornaments are fun toys for them to play with, ha.

I actually used some burlap runners leftover from our wedding reception to make some burlap and ribbon tree garland. I simply cut the burlap into 2 super long strips and then glued some tartan ribbon onto one of them. Super easy and I love the sentiment it brings to the tree as well.

I hung up some chalkboard wooden tags that were originally going to be used to display table numbers at our wedding reception. We wound up not even using table numbers, but that’s okay because these tags made for simple ornaments. Plus they can easily be tweaked, which is a good thing because my snowman and snowflake could use some work, lol.

I took the clothespins that were used for our postcard time capsule guestbook and made them into snowflakes. You may have recently seen the tutorials I posted on our DIY twig tree and Wood Slice Christmas ornaments, and of course, we added lots of tartan ribbon bows 🙂

Pinecone ornaments are super easy to make and I love the rustic feel they bring to the tree. I added a little glitter spray paint and some pretty ribbon to jazz them up a bit.

My sister-in-law recently gave me a ton of these carriage hinges, so I turned a few of them into ornaments. I just added some gold nail polish and then hung them with metallic sting that came with the wedding bells we used for our DIY wedding wands.

And of course as a huge fan of scrabble, words with friends and Bananagrams, I had to make some scrabble ornaments! I went the super simple route using pieces from an extra game someone gave us a while back.Rustic Cabin Inspired Christmas Tree! Here are some more photos of our wood slice ornaments, which I LOVE!

I hung up some of my framed chalkboards that I transferred some Christmas images onto. You can download my FREE Christmas Printables Here, and I just LOVE the holiday placemat pillows I recently made! As for the tree skirt, I ditched our usual one and just layered some extra burlap fabric down.

And as much as I love the tree topper I picked up from Target a couple of years ago, we have never been able to get it to sit straight on our tree. Does anyone else have this problem? We didn’t have enough branches to stick through the springy part either, so we simply removed it and then it worked perfectly!

So what do you think? Do you decorate your tree the same every year or like to change it up a bit?

  1. Hi sweetie,
I like the wood slice ornaments the best (I want one) but all of them are pretty cool.
Is it too late to add a Bailey caption?

“hmmm as soon as those sugar plums stops dancing its dinner time.”

  2. What a fabulous job you did on your tree. I love that you reused items you had. Love the wood tags, and the burlap/ribbon. Very pretty!

    1. Oooh I LOVE fabric ornaments and will have to make some next year. Yay for upcycling! We have always added new ornaments to the tree every year, but this is my first year making most of them and it was so much fun. Thanks for stopping by, I’m off to check out your ornaments 🙂

  5. I just love your theme! That layered plaid and burlap garland is perfect. Never thought to put chalkboard ornaments on the tree, but I love it! I found you at From my Front Porch and am a new follower. I’d love it if you shared this at my Party, What We Accomplished Wednesdays, if you would like. Have a very merry Christmas!

  8. It looks just beautiful! I love all your decorations but I think my favorite are the wood slices and the clothespin stars!

    Have a Merry Christmas!
