I just love working on our wedding DIY projects and have recently become obsessed with making banners. Well, today I am sharing a super easy tutorial on how to create a DIY chalkboard banner using a chipboard journal. I purchased 2 packages of these cute chipboard journal cutouts at Michael’s for under $5 total! In fact, I think they were on sale and closer to $3 for both packages.
DIY Chalkboard Banner
The number of chipboard journals you buy will actually depend on how long you want your banner to be. You could buy just one and write “love” on it, or buy 2 to spell out “Thank You”, write your wedding date, or buy 3 and spell out “love is sweet”.
The possibilities are endless and what I love most is you can erase the chalk and change the saying. In fact, it doesn’t even need to be wedding related! You can use this for any kind of party, or display it on your mantel with your favorite saying.
Materials Needed for DIY Chalkboard Banner:
- (2) Chipboard Journals
- Chalkboard Paint – spray paint or in the can
- Chalk
- Twine
Step 1:
Paint the front of each chipboard piece (the smoother side).
Step 2:
Once the paint is dry apply a second coat of paint if necessary. Optional: You could lightly sand the sides down a little bit to smooth them out a tad before adding the second coat of chalkboard paint.
Step 3:
Paint the back of the chipboard piece. This is optional but I decided to paint both sides of my chipboard.
Step 4:
Cover each piece with chalk and then erase it. This “seasons” the chalkboard paint, so that your first drawing isn’t imprinted forever 🙂
Step 5:
Write whatever you would like onto your chipboard pieces using chalk.
Step 6:
Measure out how much twine you will need, thread it through the pre-made holes in the chipboard pieces, and tie a knot at the very end of each side so the chipboard won’t slide off.
That’s it! This is such an easy project and so versatile.
We displayed this banner at our “thank you” table and later took an awkward photo holding it up, haha.
