If you are planning a fall wedding and would like to incorporate pumpkins into your wedding decor, this is an easy project you may want to tackle.
Of course, this also goes to show that you can tweak any basket with items you already have on hand to create a more personal flower girl basket for your wedding. I was able to make this white DIY pumpkin flower girl basket for less than $5, and my niece loved it!
DIY Pumpkin Flower Girl Basket
Although I knew I wanted a white pumpkin basket, I was thrilled when I found an orange one at Michael’s that I could paint. I used a 50% off coupon which brought the cost of this basket to about $5 – not too shabby. Plus you could probably score some really great deals on pumpkin baskets if you purchase them offseason.
Aside from the basket, everything else I used we already had on hand which was awesome! So be sure to scour your home and see what you may already have.
Materials Needed for Pumpkin Flower Girl Basket:
- Pumpkin Basket
- Primer
- White Paint
- Faux Olive Branch
- Floral Wire
- Wire Cutters
- Twine
- Lace
- Spray sealer
The first thing I did was remove the red berries from the basket and then paint the pumpkin white, inside and out. I painted a few coats on, but primer would have helped cut the coats in half. Once it’s dry you can spray it with sealer.
TIP: Use primer first! I didn’t and after a few days, the orange would begin to bleed through. No matter how many coats of white paint I added, the orange eventually managed to seep through in certain areas. This could have been avoided had I used primer.
I then wrapped and weaved the faux greenery (olive branch?) around the basket and cut off whatever excess I didn’t need with wire cutters.
I used floral wire to attach the loose leaves to the basket and went around the entire basket until I achieved a look I liked.
I then used some twine and lace {that belonged to my grandma} to tie bows on each side of the grapevine basket handle.
That’s it! Here is the basket all finished up:
You can make your flower girl more personal to you and your wedding by incorporating your wedding colors in the ribbon or using flowers instead of greenery around the edge.
Here is the before and after:
My (not quite 3 years old) niece got nervous at the last minute and so she ended up walking down the aisle with my dad’s wife. At least she played with the basket before the wedding, and we do have a video of her throwing one petal onto the ground as they walked out, lol. Plus she seemed happy to be able to take it home.
And here it is the night of our reception, you can see some of that orange coming through that I mentioned earlier:
So what do you think of my pumpkin flower girl basket? Not bad for $5, eh?
Adorable!
This is the cutest thing! I hope there is a fall bride in my near future who’ll let me make this for her 🙂 Pinned! (Found you through DIY Dreamer link party. You have a great blog!)
can you tell me where you found the pumpkin basket thank you
Hi, just wanted to let you know I made these based on your tutorial! They came out great! Thank you so much for sharing!
Yay, that’s awesome!
Is it possible to find these baskets now, in Feb.? The wedding is in May and I have no idea where to even begin looking for this shape of basket!
Sorry Karen, I just saw this! Hmmm, I don’t think Michael’s will carry them out of season, but you may have better luck online. I’d just do a search of “pumpkin basket” or something along those lines.
