I’m so excited to share the BEHR 2016 Color Trends with you and show you how I’ve used a couple of the colors in our rustic-modern dining room.
Plus be sure to check out how my fellow bloggers from the #DIYBehrExpert team are using their favorite color trend paints in their own projects.
Fall Dining Room Decor + 2016 Color Trends
Here’s a little blurb from BEHR about the reason behind the paint colors chosen this year:
“As the hypnotic draw of technology lures the masses into an ever plugged-in existence, a need for analog experiences and environmental stimulation drives us to engage the senses of sight, sound, smell, and touch in our homes. This new direction in design is raising the bar to create interiors that are appealing to a design-savvy, yet sensory-deprived society.” – BEHR Color Trends 2016
My favorite colors are definitely the earthy hues that bring nature indoors, and these are also the colors that inspired our dining room refresh. Which colors are your favorite?
In case you are new here, we are currently renting the home we live in and although the walls are a pretty beige, they are also VERY dark. The color in the dining room also had a greenish tint to it and could feel quite cavernous. Luckily for us, the landlord told me that as long as I keep the walls neutral, he doesn’t care what I paint them, yay!
So my first thought was how I need to brighten the walls up. This room opens up to the living room which has ridiculously high ceilings and dark beige paint as well. To be honest, I’m not sure if I will get to painting that room before our lease is up, and I was hoping that by painting this room lighter, it may help push some of that light into the living room. Luckily, it worked!
I’m not saying the living room is completely flooded with light now, but it definitely feels brighter just by having the extra light in our dining room reflect into it. And all it took was a few hours and a can of paint.
Here is a photo of the dining room from the rental listing before we moved in so that you can get a sense of the color. You can also see some photos in last year’s Fall Home Tour.
I should also mention that this was my first time using the BEHR Marquee paint and oh my goodness is it AMAZING! You only have to do 1 coat. Yes, just one coat of paint!! Talk about a time saver and a game-changer.
I’ll admit that I was skeptical at first, but I’m happy to report that it REALLY did go on in just one coat! The paint color I chose is Bowstring, which looked like a light beige on the website, but it turned out to be more of a light greige {beigy-grey} on our walls.
I was worried that it may not have enough contrast with the wainscoting in the dining room, but it looked so pretty I just couldn’t resist!
Our dining room is a mixture of old and new and was created on a budget with the help of all of our DIY projects.
Oh, and you may notice that we recently re-transformed the dining room table we built and I love it!
I’ve been wanting a large coffee bar set up in this dining room since we moved in, and previously used a small console table. We moved our upcycled barnwood cabinets in here and now we have the perfect set up.
I upcycled a piece of scrap wood and painted it Black Pearl, and then added some moose hooks to create a little mug holder. I love these little guys!
Although I didn’t use the actual paint colors, I can also see hints of the Emperor’s Silk, Charcoal Plum, Ivory Keys and maybe even the Raw Copper in this room.
I also sprinkled a little bit of Fall into the space.
I now have a printable version of this pumpkins sign in the shop – which is also included in all basic membership plans.
I really wanted to create a neutral, earthy dining room with rustic touches that still felt current. Now, this is my favorite room in the house! So what do you think? Will you be using any of the 2016 color trends in your home?
Paint Colors used in the space:
BEHR MARQUEE in Satin: Bowstring T16-19
BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA in Satin: Black Pearl: T16-01

Beautiful space and I love the colors!
Thank you Robin!
I’m really digging the color on your walls – the bowstring looks so much different than on the swatch and it’s a perfect way to brighten up your space.
Thanks Kim, it really brightens up the space. It definitely turned out more light gray in the space but what’s funny is when we went to paint the room next to it, it looked much more beige at first, but once dry looked more gray as well. I think it may be because we don’t have a lot of windows in that area but either way I love how much brighter the rooms feel 🙂
I like Fifth Olive-nue!
Me too Susan! We were considering using that color in our RV before deciding to go with a darker charcoal. It’s super pretty though so I’m a fan for sure 🙂
This is so beautiful! I love the colors you used and obsessed with that moose hook DIY!n Thanks for sharing at the Creative Circle Link Party!
Thanks Deb! Those moose hooks are one of my favorite things in this room 🙂
This looks great! And, I love your tree photograph art! Did you make that too? I’m a sucker for the whole rustic modern look — love this!
Oh wow! So, I do believe it’s official. I’m moving in. I kid, I kid! Your house is absolutely stunning though. 😉
As long as you don’t mind living in a space that’s constantly in transition you are more than welcome, lol. Thank you so much 🙂
What a gorgeous space, Katie! I absolutely love it, and the green from your chandelier is the perfect pop.
Thanks Alexis! I love the pop of green against the other neutrals too 🙂
I really like the moose cup holders! Your coffee bar looks wonderful!
Thanks Carmen! That was such an easy DIY and it’s also one of my faves.
I love your color palette and I can totally get down with the other Behr 2016 colors!! So great.
Bowstring is my favorite!
Lovely home & paint colors. I love Behr paints. Too bad I missed the giveaway. Happy Fall btw.
I love everything about this space. I am DYING to know how you hung that art! Do you have a DIY tutorial? Or would you be willing to share your tips? Obsessed.
Hi Mimi,
Thanks so much! It was super easy and I just posted about it here: https://mountainmodernlife.com/large-wall-hanging/

Hi Katie – Your room looks great! Where did you get the moose hooks? Thanks!
Thank you Krystyne! I bought them at HomeGoods but they are made by Broyhill. You can find similar ones on Amazon 🙂
Hi katie! I found this post on Pinterest, and love the post for the paint color. But I really want to know about your dining room rug as well as that art piece on the wall above the coffee bar. Love them both so much. Would you share sources? Thank you so much in advance!
Hi Caryn,
I just updated the sources at the bottom of the post 🙂 The rug was from World Market and the wall hanging I made.
Katie
Absolutely beautiful! We have similar style, I would love to know where you found that gorgeous rug under your dining table.
Thanks!
I actually link to the rug under the “Sources” at the bottom of the post. It’s from World Market, but I don’t know if they still have it available. I love this rug though and was able to pick it up for $50, not too shabby 🙂
I love the picture you have above your coffee bar! Where did you get it? Thanks
Hi Kylie,
It’s actually an engineering print I made from a photo I took in Tahoe. I have the tutorial on how to make something similar here:
https://mountainmodernlife.com/large-wall-hanging/
And then I sell the print in my shop here:

Hi Katie,
I’m also curious about the actual coffee bar. I didn’t see anyone else ask about this piece. Did you make it or did you purchase this somewhere??
Thanks!
Katie Thompson
Hi Katherine,
If you’re talking about the cabinet with the barn wood style doors, we actually made it and link to it at the bottom of the post where it says “Dining Room Sources”. Here’s the direct link 🙂
