Christmas is just a couple days away but I wanted to go ahead and post this gift idea anyway. I LOVE wood slice ornaments and even made a ton more this year to add to our tree, including a wedding photo ornament.
DIY Ornament Gift Box
I know these are nothing new, but they definitely seem to be growing in popularity. Last year I added these as gift toppers for friends and family, but this year I thought it would be fun to make a chalkboard keepsake box to put some in and give as a gift for Christmas.
Last month I became OBSESSED with a photo I saw on Anthropologie of chalkboard kraft wrapping paper. The mix of chalkboard with copper and greenery is perfection in my eyes. So I decided to use that to inspire this ornament gift box.

Spray/Craft Paint in different color for interior/paintbrush {optional}
Greenery from tree
I knew I wanted to give away a set of 4 DIY wood slice ornaments so I purchased a wooden cigar box at the craft store for less than $5 to place them in.
I then spray painted the outside with chalkboard spray paint.
Once it was dry I painted the inside a custom mixed green color I had on hand. I used 2 coats on the inside. Afterward, I sprayed the inside and outside of the box with some clear sealer.
And here it is with 4 ornaments inside:
I wrapped the box with some copper leather cord and tucked in a clipping from our Christmas tree. The copper cord was purchased a while back from the craft store for $3 with a 50% off coupon.
And here it is all put together, along with “Cheers” written in chalk on top. You could write the person’s name on it or any other holiday message.
I actually did the same thing with a small wooden box I had on hand and placed a wood slice ornament inside. I think a DIY ornament gift box is perfect for an extra special ornament like “Our First Christmas”, “Baby’s First Christmas”, etc.
I don’t know about you, but I’d be happy to get a gift like this on Christmas! I think it could also be a fun idea for a gift exchange. What do you think?
cute wood :3
How did you get the ornaments to stay put inside the box?
Hi Lacey,
There was an enclosure on the cigar box so it stayed closed until that clasp was opened. I actually put holiday tissue paper inside the box too though to keep them from sliding all over the place from within the box.

This tutorial has me so inspired! I’m thinking of making chalk boxes for gifts for my friends kids filled with chalk and colored pencils, crayons etc.
